HARPERS FERRY — Country music artist Bucky Covington will perform on the stage at The Amp at Sam Michael’s Park on Oct. 5 as part of the Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Mac & Brews Fall Festival. Covington is one of five groups scheduled to play.
The festival, a new addition to the venue, will feature an afternoon and evening of fun, which will include a macaroni and cheese competition, bluegrass and country music, beer and wine and vendors. Children’s activities will be available to make the event a family affair.
Covington, an eighth-place finisher in the fifth season of American Idol, released his first album, “Bucky Covington,” in 2007. The album opened at number one on Billboard’s top Country Albums chart, with the biggest first week sales for any debut country artist that year.

Covington went on to become the best-selling debut artist of 2007, with three consecutive Top 10 singles, “Different World,” “I’ll Walk” and “Good to Be Us.” His recent singles include 2018’s “Buzzin” and “Drinking Side of Country,” a duet he recorded with Shooter Jennings.
Covington, born in Rockingham, North Carolina, now resides outside of Nashville, Tennessee. After several years of touring, Covington took a break to enjoy watching his daughter grow up.
“I was on tour in Japan and Korea and watched a video of my daughter taking her first steps,” Covington said this week in a telephone interview. “I realized it was time to go home and spend time with her, because you never get those days back.”
Now back to touring, Covington is working on a new album and has just completed filming of a movie, “Brother’s Keeper,” which will debut in October.
While touted as a country music performer, Covington said if he could have played on a stage with anyone, it would have to be Elvis.
“That sounds like a clich, but I am a big fan of showmanship and no one put on a show like Elvis,” he said, mentioning that Michael Jackson would be his next choice, as Jackson was also a master of showmanship.
Covington has played shows in West Virginia on multiple occasions, but has never visited the Eastern Panhandle.
“I love West Virginia,” he said. “And I love playing outdoor shows,” he added, after learning that The Amp at Sam Michael’s is a new outdoor venue.
“I tell you what, make sure people wear comfortable dancing shoes. I like a high energy show and love for the folks to get involved,” Covington said, mentioning he will schedule time to sign autographs during the event. “My goal is to get invited back to play again.”
Jefferson County Parks director Jennifer Myers said it will be a great afternoon of music and fun.
“We hope that this Mac & Brews event becomes an annual one,” Myers said. “Our goal is to provide events that are community-oriented and allow for participation from various groups and individual.”
The Mac & Brews event will be held rain-or-shine. Tickets are available at a cost of $15 for adults, $5 for students ages 12-17 and 11-and-under free.
