NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A Black Lives Matter mural in East Nashville has been defaced less than one day after it was painted.

The mural was created by volunteers Saturday afternoon. An aerial view of Woodland Street between North 1st Street and Interstate Drive shows the full image of “Black Lives Matter” written out.

Today burnout tire marks can be seen across the image.

Niti Sharan, an organizer behind the mural, says the damage is heartbreaking– and symbolic.

“I think it’s really sad that not even 24 hours could go by without racism showing its ugly face. This is exactly why this is here. This actually spearheads and shows the racism that people feel on a daily basis.”

Sharan says she hopes volunteers will return to fix the mural.
