Tennessee offensive lineman Trey Smith and the Lady Vol swimming and diving team were both honored by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

Smith was named the Co-Amateur Athlete of the Year, sharing the award with Vanderbilt’s Kumar Rocker, while the Lady Vols were named the Female Amateur Team of the Year. Smith is the first Vol football player to win the award since Eric Berry three-peated from 2008-10.

Both will formally be presented with the awards at the Hall of Fame’s annual induction ceremony on Aug. 1 at the Omni Nashville Hotel.

Smith has started 31 career games for the Vols. In 2019, he was named to the All-SEC first team by the Associated Press and SEC coaches, the All-SEC second team by Pro Football Focus and the Jason Witten Man of the Year award as well for his community work.

The 6-foot-6 senior also won the inaugural Fritz Pollard Trophy, given to the college football player who “best exemplifies extraordinary courage, community values and exceptional performance on the field.”

The Lady Vols won the SEC swimming championship last season — the first in school history – finishing the season 8-0 and finishing ranked No. 3 in the country. Five of their eight wins were against CSCAA top-25 teams.

At the SEC championship meet, Tennessee took home eight gold, two silver and on bronze medal as it defeated second-place Florida by 29 points. The Lady Vols had 10 members named to the All-SEC team and had 15 members earn CSCAA All-American honors.

It’s the first Amateur Team of the Year award for UT since tennis doubles partners Mikelis Lbietis and Hunter Reese won the award in 2015.
