NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The widow of a man killed by a stray bullet at Edgehill Apartments has filed a lawsuit against Metro Development and Housing Agency (MDHA) for allegedly failing to “curb persistent criminal activities that led to the murder of her husband.”

Glen Young, Jr. died one year ago after being caught by a stray bullet while visiting his sick sister, who was a tenant at Edgehill Apartments. Metro police said he opened the door to look outside after he heard gunshots. He was hit in the chest and rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.

There were 106 crimes reported in and around the the area during the last six months, according to the lawsuit citing Metro police. Of those crimes, 36 were rated as serious with the majority being assault, burglar, and weapon-related violence.

The lawsuit said the crime rate is extremely high for a small complex.

Tia Fitzpatrick-Young accused MDHA of being aware of the crime last year but failed to provide a safe environment for its tenants and guests. She also says that if MDHA doesn’t act, there will be even more victims.

Fitzpatrick-Young is being represented by Rocky McElhaney Law Firm who filed the lawsuit earlier this month. The attorney suggested that MDHA was negligent in allowing crimes to continue and argues that Young would still be alive if there were reasonable measures to curb illegal activity.

Young was a Kroger employee before he died. In an event celebrating his birthday last year , the widow told NewsChannel 5 that Young was a dependable, reliable loving husband. It was sad,” she said.”
