NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Metro Nashville police officers want to make sure families living in the community they protect and serve have gifts for Christmas.

On Christmas Eve morning, officers got rolling on their annual Christmas Basket Program.

Police collect donations from the department and community all year long to buy toys and food for families. Tuesday morning, they began packing those gifts into baskets and delivered them later in the morning.

This marks the 59th year the department has done this.

Only two families were helped back when the program first started in 1961. But now, the department expects to help more than 700 kids this year. In total, about 250 households are being helped.

Police say it’s one of their favorite things to do this time of the year.
