The surprise announcements for the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame continued over the weekend as former Vols quarterback Heath Shuler was announced as the latest inductee of the 2020 class.

The news was announced during the 63-58 men’s basketball win over Florida at home on Saturday.

“We are thrilled to have Heath Shuler join the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2020,” Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Chief Advancement and Operations Officer Brad Willis said. “Heath’s tenure at the University of Tennessee was an exciting time that Tennessee fans will long remember.”

A former member of Congress, Shuler played three seasons for the Vols, starting at QB from 1992-93 with an 18-5-1 record. He was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1993, the year he was named the SEC Player of the Year after passing for 2,354 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions with a 157.3 QB rating.

Shuler was drafted No. 3 overall by the Washington Redskins in the 1994 NFL Draft. He played four seasons in Washington, passing for 3,691 yards, 15 touchdowns and 33 interceptions before retiring at the end of the 1997 season.

“There have been many elite football players in the University of Tennessee’s history, but Heath Shuler ranks among our very best,” UT Athletics Director Phillip Fulmer said. “He was ahead of his time as a quarterback, excelling as both a passer and a rusher.

“His toughness always stood out, and he was a terrific leader. Those leadership skills obviously carried over to his career as a U.S. Representative. I’m thrilled to see Heath receive this honor from the Hall.”

Shuler joins a growing list of local sports icons in the 2020 class that include former Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, former Nashville Predators broadcaster Terry Crisp, current Vanderbilt baseball coach Tim Corbin and former NBA player Tony Delk.
