Amazon aims to fill 30,000 positions with job fairs nationwide — including in Nashville  The Tennessean

Forget Prime Day, Amazon’s next massive event is Career Day when the company is hoping to fill more than 30,000 jobs with job fairs at several major cities.

Nashville, where Amazon is set to open a new Operations Center of Excellence, will hold its hiring event Tuesday, Sept. 17.

On the same date, the online retailer will hold events in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle and in Arlington, Virginia, where the company is building its second U.S. headquarters.

The jobs include full-time and part-time positions and involve everything from software engineers who could earn more than $100,000 a year to warehouse staff paid at least $15 an hour to pack and ship orders.

Amazon said to plans to hire more than 5,000 workers at the Operations Center of Excellence at the Nashville Yards development downtown.

While it is under construction, Amazon is leasing offices downtown for 1,000 individuals.

It’s unclear how many of the 30,000 positions the online shopping giant hopes to fill are Nashville based.

The Nashville center will be focused on logistics and will hire management and tech positions. Jobs will be offered in a variety of roles and levels — including software developers, engineers, data scientists, finance positions and others.

Amazon’s Career Day event in Nashville will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Cannery Ballroom, 1 Cannery Row.

Those interested can register for the Career Day events on Amazon.com’s job site. According to an FAQ on Amazon’s site, the company won’t be conducting interviews or taking applications but recruiters will be available to talk to job candidates about the company’s jobs across the nation.

“I encourage anyone willing to think big and move fast to apply for a job with us,” said Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos, in a statement to the Associated Press. “You’ll get to invent and see Amazon making even bolder bets on behalf of our customers.”

About 1,000 recruiters will be at the Career Day events to talk with prospective applicants, Amazon says.

The Associated Press said the hiring spree is not related to the usual increase in hiring the company does to prepare for the busy holiday season. The 30,000 positions would represent a 5% bump in Amazon’s total workforce.

In July, Amazon said it planned to spend $700 million to retrain one-third of its U.S. employees – about 100,000 workers – by 2025 to reshape its workforce to fit its evolving needs.

Amazon already has more than 650,000 employees worldwide, making it the second-biggest U.S.-based private employer behind Walmart. And that number will likely rise: Amazon’s second headquarters in Arlington is expected to employ 25,000 people in the next 12 years. And the company has moved into more industries, including health care and advertising.
