New tenant rights bill aims to protect renters in Nashville – NewsChannel5.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — As a city on the rise, Nashville continues to welcome new residents year after year. But a new bill introduced in Metro City Council aims to protect the many new and existing renters; so that they’re not left scrambling to find a new home last minute.

Council member Brandon Taylor says he introduced bill BL2020-224 back in March after a deadly tornado hit Nashville.

“In the midst of the tornado I noticed many of the residents in my district they were being asked to leave their homes and not come back to their homes because property was going to be sold,” said Councilman Taylor of District 21.

The ordinance, if passed, would require landlords to notify tenants 30 days prior to listing the property for sale.

Taylor says he hopes this bill will bring awareness to families that may be displaced by a pending sale of a property. With more than 50 percent of Nashvillians are renting. it can be stressful finding a place that is within a family’s budget, especially if they have pets.

Councilman Taylor says currently, landlords do not have to give any notice.
