‘He never came back’: Family of innocent bystander killed in shooting wants justice – NewsChannel5.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The family of David Gooch is urging witnesses to come forward and help them get justice after he shot and killed during a shootout.

Investigators with the Metro Nashville Police Department said Gooch was found on the ground with a gunshot wound to the face on Sunday, July 26 near the JC Napier public housing development just south of downtown. They said he was an innocent bystander caught in the middle of the gunfire exchange involving at least three people.

“He was a loving, caring and sweet brother,” sister Sandra Lee told NewsChannel 5. “We had our ups and downs but I couldn’t ask for a better brother.”

The Hermitage precinct continued to investigate more than two weeks after his death.

Lee said the family was planning a get together that Sunday when a friend of Gooch knocked on her apartment door in the Whites Creek area. Gooch told her he was going to drive with his friend to a nearby store.

“He said he’ll be right back. But he never came back,” Lee said.

The family said they never heard from him until later that evening when they received a call from a chaplain that he died. His sisters also want whoever picked him up from the apartment to tell them how he ended up near JC Napier.

“I just want to know when you picked him up, why didn’t you have the decency to tell us, why David wasn’t with him, why he left him or where he took him,” sister Dorothy Cox said. “We still don’t know.”
