St. Roch gathers for family picnic
GREENWICH — St. Roch Church in Chickahominy held its annual family picnic on Sunday, Oct 6. This year, the event was dedicated to the volunteers that make possible the many events the church hosts, including its popular carnival and feast in August.
The Rev. Carl D. McIntosh honored the many volunteers with awards at the picnic for the work they have done over the past year.
ESF Summer Camps head to Greenwich Catholic
The ESF Summer Camps will move to Greenwich Catholic School for summer 2020 and beyond, after 27 years at Greenwich Academy.
“We’re thrilled to officially call Greenwich Catholic School’s campus our new home,” said Michael Rouse, CEO and co-founder of ESF. “ESF works year-round to design innovative and cutting-edge offerings for our campers, and this move to GCS will meet the increasing enrollment demand for these unparalleled, customized programs.”
The new location will give campers access to “extensive on-campus facilities and promotes our overall commitment to youth development,” he said.
ESF offers summer curriculum to boys and girls, ages 3 to 15.
The ESF Camps will have access to a variety of facilities for fun-filled camp experiences, rain or shine. Campers will enjoy two pools, athletic fields, art studios, playgrounds, STEM labs, maker spaces and tennis courts. GCS’s indoor and outdoor pools will allow ESF to provide additional Red Cross certified swim instruction and more swim time for campers.
“ESF’s longstanding and meaningful commitment to youth is appealing to us because of the synergy with our school’s mission,” said Mario Gaztambide, chair of the Greenwich Catholic School Board of Directors.

Local students matriculate at colleges
Hundreds of students from across Greenwich have matriculated at colleges and universities throughout the nation this fall.
Andrew Carlson of Cos Cob and Elizabeth Essaid of Old Greenwich are among those new students. Both are enrolled as first-year students at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. They joined a class of 474 students this fall.
The Class of 2021 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Penn., includes the following local students: Mitchell Finkelstein of Greenwich; Katherine Turkeltaub of Riverside; Quentin Schubert of Old Greenwich; Timothy Hanna of Old Greenwich; Sabrina Trabish of Greenwich; Yusef Abaza of Greenwich; Leila Schneider of Greenwich; Alexandra Farricker of Greenwich; Ella Morrissey of Greenwich; Frederick Tucker of Old Greenwich; and Mitchell Katz of Greenwich.
At Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., freshmen and transfer students spent an afternoon traveling to 50 locations across the greater Nashville area to do community service. The event, called SERVE, allows students to immerse themselves in their new hometown. Two local students taking part were Julia Bibeault of Greenwich and Samuel Nadler of Old Greenwich.
At the University of Vermont in Burlington, incoming student Lillian Grady of Greenwich and more than 270 first-year students, led by 76 upper class leaders, began their UVM experience by taking part in TREK, a seven-day first year enrichment program sponsored by the University’s Department of Student Life.
Grady participated in White Water Kayaking, which provides incoming students an opportunity to improve existing skills or develop basic paddling skills while exploring the Kennebec River in Maine. Groups spent days on the water and evenings camping riverside, learning more about paddling kayaks, river hydrology, safety and life at UVM.
