BC Art Gallery reopens with new exhibits

The works of C. Curry Bohm will be on display at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive, beginning Aug. 15. The show ends Oct. 16. Bohm was born in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1894 and made his first visit to Brown County in 1920.

The Indiana Heritage Arts annual exhibition and sale will be Oct. 24 through Nov. 14 at the Brown County Art Gallery. The call for entry opened July 27 and will close Friday, Sept. 25. All entries and payments must be submitted online. For more information, visit browncountyartgallery.org.

Visitors to the gallery are required to wear masks, use hand sanitizer and practice social distancing. The number of guests in the gallery at one time will be limited.

Art demonstrations to take place at guild

The Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., began a series called “The Artist is In” on July 18. Visitors to the guild can see artists showcase their talents in demonstrations that highlight different techniques and mediums.

  • Saturday, Aug. 15 — Wyatt LeGrand, oil demonstration
  • Saturday, Aug. 29 — Mark Burkett, woodblock printmaking
  • Sunday, Aug. 30 — Donna Shortt and Pam Newell, pastel and oil demonstrations

Various artists featured at local gallery

Mosaic and felted wool artist Sally Kinsey and woodworker Don Wood are featured during August at Hoosier Artist Gallery.

Kinsey creates colorful mosaic mirrors, sculptures and jewelry and needle-felts wool into whimsical animals, wall hangings and lampshades.

Wood uses both new and reclaimed woods in the building of his unique tables, rockers and wine racks. He accepts commissioned work.

The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at 45 S. Jefferson St.

Arts in the Parks events happening in August

Two local artists received Arts in the Parks grants to bring art activities to local parks and historic sites this year.

Patricia Rhoden Bartels will host the following events:

  • Brown County State Park, Saturday, Aug. 22, draw-along with painting demonstration “Drawing the Dusk,” 6 to 8 p.m. at Nature Center lookout. Site will have 10 to 15 chairs, pre-registration is required. Bartels will provide a sketch book and drawing pencil to sketch and take notes for the first 15 visitors.
  • TC Steele Historic Site, Sunday, Aug. 23, draw-along with painting demonstration, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Site will have 10 to 15 chairs, pre-registration is required. Bartels will provide a sketch book and drawing pencil to sketch and take notes for the first 15 visitors.

Anabel Hopkins will conduct art activities at T.C. Steele Historic Site each Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning Aug. 5. The final outing will be Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Hopkins will work out of the Little Studio and offer free “make and takes” of fluid acrylic painting on ceramic tiles. She will also perform demonstrations of the technique. Workshops for acrylic pouring on canvas will be scheduled on Saturday, Aug. 22, each limited to five people, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Art colony weekend, paint-out set for September

Brown County’s annual Art Colony Weekend is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, Sept. 11 through 13. More details are to be announced in the coming weeks.

The annual Villagescape Plein Air Paint Out is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The rain or shine event is hosted by the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St. Artists are invited to celebrate the beauty and art heritage of Brown County by capturing the “sights and sites” with paint and canvas, board or paper.

The cost is $15 to $20 for registration.

IHA postpones annual show, has new requirements

In order to work within the COVID-19 protocols of the Brown County Art Gallery, the Indiana Heritage Arts Board has made adjustments to this year’s annual exhibition.

The new show dates are Oct. 24 to Nov. 14 at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive. Changes include early drop-off days and online opening with no reception.
