About ONE NASHVILLE

ONE NASHVILLE brings together people, organizations and businesses with a common commitment – to make Metro Nashville Public Schools the best in the country. We believe we can achieve that goal only if the entire city gets involved to support Metro Schools. More...

Volunteer

When you volunteer your time in a Nashville public school, you have a chance to directly impact the lives of the young people you meet.

The PENCIL Foundation connects volunteers and businesses with schools by helping develop a partnership plan that matches their interests, time and resources to the needs of the students in the school. If you have an interest in volunteering, visit www.schoolvolunteers.org to sign up and to review available volunteer opportunities. You can also learn more about school partnerships and volunteers by visiting PENCIL’s website, www.pencilfoundation.org, or calling (615) 242-3167, ext. 231.

The PENCIL Foundation also coordinates volunteers for the Academies of Nashville. The Academies are smaller learning communities focused on a particular career or theme within each of Metro’s 12 zoned high schools, and they prepare high school graduates for both college and career. Student participation in the Academies program results in increased attendance and graduation rates. The program needs Nashville-area businesses, community organizations and individuals who can volunteer with an individual school and share their professional experiences and expertise. For more information about the Academies of Nashville, click here. For information about volunteering in the Academies, click here.

Impact Nashville is part of a national effort by mayors to increase the number of volunteers in communities across the country to impact each city’s greatest needs and priorities. In Nashville, Mayor Karl Dean is asking volunteers to help improve third-grade reading scores in our city’s highest-need schools. Volunteers are needed to tutor/mentor select kindergarten through second-grade students during the school day by reading with them using PENCIL Foundation’s Reading Partners curriculum. You can register for these focused Impact Nashville initiatives at schoolvolunteers.org. Select “Impact Nashville” as your initiative from the drop-down menu.

If you represent a local organization or nonprofit, Alignment Nashville will help you serve our schools and students. Through Alignment Nashville, groups across the city collaborate on projects that are aligned with the school district’s strategic plan. If you would like to volunteer for these projects, please visit the Alignment Nashville website for a list of ongoing initiatives. For more information about how your organization can get involved with Metro Schools through Alignment Nashville, please call (615) 585-8497 or visit www.alignmentnashville.org.
